In the japanese daily CD singles ranking, two anime songs took No.1 & 2 on April 24th.
It's surprising, when considering the anime program is broadcasted at 2 o'clock midnight.
The best way not to decrease sales of CDs at least in Japan is maybe producing music for Otaku (fanboy)!
"Supercell" proves it too.
This no-name japanese musician uploads original tracks with Vocaloid-voice in Nico nico douga, japanese video sharing website.
As his first album was out on March 4th 2009 on Sony records, it won up to No.4 in the japanese album ranking and was sold more than 70.000 copies.
In fact, 5 songs of top 10 in the weekly CD singles ranking are related to anime...
cool!

That's really interesting. I agree that Otakus probably commit themselves more to the actual product and support the artist.
返信削除But I always thougt that CD sales are still ok in Japan, no ?
Yep, Japanese still buy and rent CDs at shops, though many people are also gradually moving away from CDs.
返信削除Btw I didn't know that CD sales in America dropped so extremly.
CD sales in Japan 2007-2008
singles (8cm+12cm):
62 million -> 54 million (-13%)
albums:
199 million -> 189 million (-5%)
CD sales in America 2007-2008
singles:
2.6 million -> 0.7 million (-71.7%)
CD*:
511 million -> 385 million (-24.7%)
* singles + albums or albums only?

You are very well informed. And yes, the drop in American CD sales is huge - and maybe you haven't seen the numbers for vinyl records yet.
返信削除Europe is following this trend but we still have quite some support for vinyl in the underground scene.
I hope sales in Japan won't drop that much too but I think there are still enough Otakus out there that want the real thing...
